I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa
and immigrated to Canada twenty five years ago with my husband Brian and our wonderful daughter Ashleigh, now 26. Brian and I have been married for 29 years. He has been the rock that has helped me get through the very difficult times I have faced over the years.
Though I desperately miss my family in South Africa, home is where the heart is - and my heart is here in Canada. The cold weather can sometimes be depressing - who wouldn’t be depressed living in the frozen wastelands of the Tundra? Having said that, one has to take the good with the bad and overall I feel extremely fortunate to live in this country.

My love of poetry was born when I graduated
from “The School of Hard Knocks”. (see My Journey). Well, if nothing else, at least I can laugh
at myself. My passions in life are exploring the Eastern Religions, reading,
music, and of course my family and friends. I particularly love music
from the the late 60’s and early 70’s, my favourite musician/poet being Leonard Cohen, who has
been my idol since I was 16. During the good times of my life this master of lyrics speaks to me like no other singer/poet could ever do, and during my gut-wrenching times his music and poetry bring me comfort.
I recently had a surreal experience on a flight from Toronto to Atlanta, when I found myself sitting next to a Buddhist monk. In two hours this man, with the most penetrating heartfelt eyes, managed to teach me some very valuable lessons in life which I will carry with me always. I was also very privileged to have attended a lecture by His Holiness the Dalai Lama, where I gleaned some very valuable insight into my passion for Eastern Religions.

I would be humbled and very much honoured
if you would read my poetry, and I would welcome your comments. My email address is shalsmom58@rogers.com
