Winter

I open the blinds and see
rain, fog and the white blanketed earth.
The ground is like a weightless blanket.
Winter suffocates me with its jaws
taking chunks out of me with its teeth;
smashing my mood into shards of melancholy.
The streets are desolate except for a few strays
shuffling along among the sludge.
An old man staggers while leaning on his cane;
a look of profound despondency deeply etched upon his face.
Winter is ravaging my inner being
and turning my skin inward
towards the deficient light.
Lips so cracked, skin so raw whilst
the cold has seeped into my soul.
The naked trees do a dance of their own,
cheering and cavorting among themselves.
The sky paints a grey nothingness of gloom
looming down on the earth.
A woman pushing a stroller
is slipping and sliding
on the frozen earth
with tears of frustration running down her face.
Why does it all have to be so difficult
to march along to the tune of winter?
An insignificant ray of sunshine greets me,
sparking a ray of hope
deep into the blackness of my soul.
A fracture of light warms the frigid air.
Ever so miniscule, ever so worthless.
The sun has gone and in its place
I see the shadow of winter has yet returned
to torture me relentlessly;
destroying my optimism
of seeing the sun once again.
I close the blinds.

Swirl of Mist

My mind is in a swirl of mist
The fog is here longing to be kissed
Love me until the melancholy fades away

I need you here, your soul so pure
To dry my tears as they fall
Like drops of dew
 So soft and moist,
Gentle as the swirling leaves

Kiss me till the warmth
Once again seeps through my mellow self
Until I am me again

Obsessive

Fat is repulsive, enlightened repeatedly
Brainwashed from birth
Taunted and ridiculed
Flesh on our bones
So abnormal, so unnatural

Hide the troops, they are coming
With their thin stunning daughters
Skeletal, but so dazzling to the eye;
Specimens of splendor, so divine

Long blond hair, flawless skin
So emaciated, but beautiful
Hips jutting out, bones so transparent
So imperative to be thin was the order of the day

Banished in life
Isolated, sitting in our seclusion occur
Designated, by the sovereign of frailty
Ostracized, not to be seen.

Wounded, mortified
If my own flesh and blood from her throne deemed it so.

Fat farms, starvation, tortured unremittingly
Malnourished, who cares.
You’ll proceed into society
With pomp and splendor

The fat should not breathe
The same air as the thin, the holy
Words pulsating in my brain

Indoctrinated, reeducated
Thank you mother dear
For dispensing such valuable information
On a golden platter

Not blinded by this drivel, realizing the truth
Comprehending that starvation isn’t life.

Collision

There is no colour in my life
Only black and grey moments in time
Where is the color, the vibrancy, the joy?
A basic requirement for ease and contentment
Don’t be sarcastic, so cynical and mocking
Do you not realize you are shattering my spirit?
Glue me back together as a whole
And then life can be a welcoming oasis
Where the two of us can be born yet again

Existence

I abhor you
Despise you
Taking away
My dreams
Without vision, what is left?
Existence

Audacity

Employment
Finally a reprieve

Shocked into reality
Being dumped
What a sham
Their deceitful faces
With no compunction
Feigning distress

With a contrived outer shell
Look into the mirror
Gazing at yourself
With self satisfaction
Audacity should cling to you
Like seaweed to the shore

Has the brain become conscious of the fact?
That we are
In someone’s dreams
No compunction but to
 Throw them back
Into the ocean of life
The sea of existence, once again
To swim around, their life in shatters

Don’t let lies
Become your confidante
Learn your first valuable word
NO

Hair

So indignant was I when I lost my hair
I’m a woman for God’ sake it just wasn’t fair
I became so embittered, so filled with confusion
Had my eyes betrayed me? Was it merely an illusion?
The mirror sniggered and ridiculed this apparition
The humiliation and shame intensified my condition

Nature was wicked, dishonest, depraved
What horrible error had it fiendishly made
The doctors, the pills, the creams and the lotion
The specialists confessed they had not a notion

It took several months to grasp the fact
So me and myself made a shrewd pact
Amazingly something finally twigged
I would have a go at wearing a wig

Is She Manic?

Is she manic or is it anxiety disorder
Clinical depression or maybe bipolar disorder
 Borderline personality
or perhaps schizophrenic
She may even be suicidal for all we can discern.
I lie beneath my threadbare blanket
Listening to this medical jargon
Are they discussing me?
Or another patient in the room.
Apparently it’s me as I reveal my face;
I see a profusion of white coats gawking at me
As if I wasn’t human, but a bizarre catastrophe.
How do you feel, what do you feel?
Are there voices in your head?
Yes, of course I hear voices in my head.
You’re talking at me, through me, but not to me
Do they actually know who I am?
Or even bothered to look at my face?
They cluster in the corner
Gesticulating wildly
Not even comprehending
I can hear every word
I may be depressed
But I’m not  f…..g deaf
On and on they confer -
I finally peer from
Under the ragged blanket
They see me and smirk
How are we feeling today my dear?
What’s this we, it’s only me
The last time I looked
Around the room
What an inane question!
If I was feeling well
Would I be here?
With bars on the windows
And locks on the doors?
No need to get defensive my dear
We’re only here to ease your pain
You’ve been roughly speaking on about thirty pills
But regrettably none of them a success
The white coat regards me with pity
I don’t need sympathy from you
All I need is normality in my life
Well my dear there is the most recent pill
Well, what have I got to lose
Only my sanity of which some is absent
They turn off my light leaving me to my dreamless slumber.
I wake up sweating and shaking
And feeling like death.
At last I fall asleep
But abruptly awake
A flashlight shining in my face-
We’re doing night rounds
To make certain you’re here
Where would I go? What a dim-witted question
I’m here for the duration
The morning draws closer
I open my eyes
The white coats gazing wearily at me
The new pill wasn’t a success
We hear from the nurse
The white coats consult once again
Thirty pills you’ve tried and cocktails thereof
We’re going to attempt
Something quite atypical
It’s called ECT,
And we believe you would benefit
You’re heavily sedated,
Your brain will convulse
As an electric current runs through it
The only drawback
Is short term memory loss
What’s this all about?
I tremble and shake
There’s so much to contemplate
The white coat believes
It’s the only answer
I was not told
It’s a temporary solution
Needless to say it wasn’t a victory.
A different cocktail of drugs.
Finally relieved my suffering
After thirteen years of desolation
Your depression has ended
Says the white coat with arrogance
Surely you know doctor, you educated man,
That depression cannot be cured,
It goes into remission oh brilliant one
Occasionally rearing its ugly head
Well as far as short term memory loss
They failed to mention its long term too

Worms

Who gave you justification?
To eat me alive
The worms slithering
To the surface
Gorge the flesh
Me

Walk a Day In My Shoes

Walk a day in my shoes
Consequently you might know
What depression essentially is?
Your skepticism shows
Since you can’t see it
Something invisible doesn’t exist
You don’t understand or care to know
Be it, eat it, feel it, grasp it,
Survive it, and afterward
Live through the hell
Rub it into your soul
Choke on it, gag, it will strangle you
Perhaps then you will comprehend
How something intangible
Can debilitate a person
I don’t expect you to understand
You’re too one dimensional

Breaking Away

We had to break away
From our country of birth
People called us cowards
To live with the rapes murders
And the certainty of the cruelty
And the expectations of violence never
Ever ending

On the surface it was serene and tranquil
Not caring that people of a different
Color were suffering

Living like animals
In their cold tiny shacks
Working as servants relentlessly
Till their hands were raw
And their feet blistered and throbbing

The food was inferior
The salary minimal
Treated so atrociously

They were people
With beating hearts
But just living in a skin
Of a different color
Of having had the misfortune
To be born black was a certainty
That they were treated like creatures
Of a different breed

Trapped like hunted animals
The pretense was great
If we didn’t see it – it wasn’t there

Humanity is sick
We need to wake up
Color is for painting
Drawing and the like
Color is for sunshine
The sun and the sea
The greenery of nature
Not for the hatred
Of different people
Whose exterior is different?

This magnificent country
Was destroyed by gluttony
Both the concrete
And the intangible
